NETGEAR Engage and Virtual Devices: Designing Your AV Network Before the Hardware Arrives!

In AV‑over‑IP projects, the real gains are often not made during installation, but much earlier — during preparation.

Anyone who regularly designs or deploys AV networks will recognize the situation. The schedule is tight, the delivery date is fixed, and once the switches arrive everything has to be right the first time. VLANs, multicast, QoS, AV profiles, uplinks, and port assignments all need to be correct before the first video, audio, or control streams can reliably run across the network.

With NETGEAR Engage Controller 2.4.x, NETGEAR has taken an interesting step forward: offline provisioning using virtual devices. This allows you to fully design and prepare an AV network before the physical hardware is available.

In this blog, I’ll explain what virtual devices are, why NETGEAR introduced this feature, and how you can use it in practice.


From “connect first” to “design first”

In many projects, real network configuration only begins once the hardware is on site. Switches are installed, discovered by the software, and then configured. That approach works, but it also creates time pressure — especially in larger AV‑over‑IP installations such as theaters, event venues, education buildings, and meeting spaces.

Virtual devices turn this workflow around.

Instead of waiting for the physical switches to arrive, you can already build a complete site in NETGEAR Engage. You select the correct switch models, create VLANs and profiles, assign ports, plan uplinks, and verify the topology. When the actual hardware arrives, it is linked to the pre‑built configuration.

The network is no longer “built” on site. The design is already done.


What exactly are virtual devices?

A virtual device is a digital representation of a supported NETGEAR device inside Engage. In practice, this mainly concerns AV switches from the M4250, M4300, M4350, and M4500 series, as these form the foundation of many AV‑over‑IP networks.

Within Engage, you can treat a virtual device as if it were part of your network design, even though it does not physically exist. For example, you can:

  • add virtual devices to a new or existing site
  • select the correct switch model
  • prepare VLANs and AV‑certified profiles
  • logically assign ports (Dante, NDI, control, lighting, uplinks, etc.)
  • plan trunks and LAGs
  • visually inspect the network topology

It’s important to stress that a virtual device is not a hardware emulator. You are not simulating real multicast traffic, PTP timing, or physical link behavior. Virtual devices are intended for design, preparation, documentation, and provisioning — exactly where a lot of time is often lost in real‑world projects.


Why did NETGEAR introduce this?

AV networks have become significantly more complex over the past few years. Modern installations often consist of multiple traffic types, each with different requirements. Think of separate VLANs for video, audio, control, lighting, and management, combined with multicast, QoS, and timing requirements.

NETGEAR Engage has long supported this complexity using AV‑certified profiles for technologies such as Dante, AES67, NDI, ST 2110, Q‑SYS, AVB, and lighting. These profiles combine validated settings with automation features like IGMP Plus, Auto‑LAG, and Auto‑Trunk.

Virtual devices add another layer on top of this: you no longer need to wait for physical hardware to logically design the network. For integrators and engineers, that means more control before installation day even begins.


The benefits of working with virtual devices

1. You can start earlier

Switches not delivered yet? Construction not finished? The project still in the design phase?

With virtual devices, you can still get started. You can prepare the site, plan port assignments, and discuss the network design with colleagues, project managers, or clients. This makes the preparation phase much less dependent on logistics and delivery schedules.


2. More consistent deployments

Many AV integrators deploy similar installations repeatedly — meeting rooms, lecture halls, auditoriums, or multiple rooms within a single venue. The environment may change, but the network design often doesn’t.

Offline provisioning makes it easier to reuse proven designs. A validated configuration can serve as the basis for future projects, reducing manual work and limiting variation between installations.


3. Less pressure on site

On site, you ideally want to focus on connecting, verifying, and delivering — not on deciding which port should get which profile at the last minute.

Because VLANs, AV profiles, port roles, and uplinks are already defined, there is far less improvisation required during installation. This also helps during troubleshooting: it becomes easier to determine whether an issue is caused by cabling, hardware, firmware, endpoints, or network logic.


4. A visual, discussable network design

The topology view in Engage is a practical tool for visually inspecting and discussing the network. This is useful not only for engineers, but also when communicating with colleagues or customers.

A clear topology gives an immediate overview of how core, edge, uplinks, endpoints, and VLANs relate to each other. It improves understanding and provides usable project documentation at the same time.


How does this work in practice?

At a high level, the workflow looks like this:

  1. Create a new site in NETGEAR Engage
  2. Add virtual devices and select the correct models
  3. Prepare VLANs and AV profiles
  4. Assign ports (for example: Dante, NDI, control, lighting, uplinks)
  5. Review the logical topology
  6. Save the configuration or reuse it as a template
  7. When the hardware arrives, connect the physical devices
  8. Engage links the hardware manually or via Auto Onboard to the virtual devices
  9. The prepared configuration is automatically applied

For Auto Onboard to work, physical devices must be in factory‑default state or use the same admin password as the site. Matching is done based on model plus serial number or MAC address. If those conditions are met, Engage can automate a large part of the process.


An important technical nuance

Virtual devices are designed for planning and provisioning, not full validation.

NETGEAR explicitly documents several limitations. MLAG and stacking are not supported on virtual devices, management VLAN IP configuration is not available, and link speed settings on virtual links are intended for design and planning only. Offline provisioning with Auto Onboard is supported only when VLAN 1 is used as the management VLAN.

This does not reduce the value of the feature, but it does clarify its purpose. Virtual devices are used to prepare the structure and logic of the network. Real validation of physical links, timing, and endpoint behavior still happens once the hardware is online.


Who is this useful for?

Virtual devices are particularly valuable for AV professionals who want structure and repeatability, such as:

  • AV integrators
  • system engineers
  • consultants
  • IT teams managing AV networks
  • project teams with multiple similar rooms
  • training environments without permanent hardware

In practice, though, the benefit is obvious to anyone who has ever had to configure an AV network under time pressure.


Conclusion

With virtual devices, NETGEAR Engage evolves from a tool primarily used on site into a platform that allows AV networks to be designed, prepared, and deployed in a controlled way.

That direction fits perfectly with how AV‑over‑IP is evolving: larger projects, tighter schedules, and an increasingly critical role for the network. In that context, you don’t want to discover on site whether your design was correct.

Or, as I like to summarize it:

Not connecting first and hoping it works, but designing and documenting first — and then deploying with confidence.
